The Metals:

 

Gold rose to as high as $1135.53 in late morning New York trade before it drifted back lower into the close, but it still ended with a gain of 0.28%. Silver slipped to as low as $15.68 and ended with a loss of 0.51%.

 

Euro gold rose to about €1083, platinum lost $16 to $891, and copper fell a couple of cents to about $2.48.

 

Gold and silver equities gained roughly 2% by midday and remained near that level into the close.

Oil closed slightly higher, the U.S. dollar index ended modestly lower, and treasuries saw small gains as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P held near unchanged in quiet pre-holiday trade.

 

Among the big names making news in the market Friday were ConocoPhillips, Monte Paschi, Bitcoin, Credit Suisse, and Deutsche Bank.
