The Metals:

 

Gold gained $15.41 to $1178.91 in Asia before it pared back to $1170.62 in London, but it then rose to a new session high of $1184.82 in New York and ended with a gain of 1.52%. Silver rose to as high as $16.709 and ended with a gain of 1.16%.

 

Euro gold rose to about €1114, platinum gained $27 to $966, and copper fell a couple of cents to about $2.53.

 

Gold and silver equities rose roughly 6% by midday and remained near that level into the close.

Oil pared early gains but still ended almost 1% higher after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories fell 7.1 million barrels, gasoline inventories rose 8.3 million barrels, and distillates rose 10.1 million barrels.

 

The U.S. dollar index fell markedly and treasuries rose as the Dow and S&P dropped on uncertainty about President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to boost government spending.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were and Macy's, Kohl's, Sears, SoftBank, Deutsche Bank, Constellation Brands, and Wal-Mart.
