October 15: Gold and Silver Gain While Stocks Drop Again

The Metals:

 

Gold gained $15.30 to $1233.30 in Asia before it chopped back lower in London and New York, but it still ended with a gain of 0.61%. Silver rose to as high as $14.773 and ended with a gain of 0.55%.

 

Euro gold climbed above €1058, platinum gained $7 to $844, and copper fell 3 cents to about $2.78.

 

Gold and silver equities rose over 3% in the first 45 minutes of trade before they drifted back lower into the close, but they still ended almost 2% higher on the day.

 

The Economy:

 

U.S. retail sales increase modestly; consumer spending strong  Reuters

The IMF is not pessimistic enough — and that’s bad news for investors  MarketWatch

U.S. budget deficit jumps to $779 billion  MarketWatch

 

Tomorrow brings Industrial production, Capacity utilization, Job openings, and the Home builders' index.

 

The Markets:

 

Oil rose over tensions with Saudi Arabia.

 

The U.S. dollar index fell on disappointing economic data.

 

Treasuries held near unchanged while the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P traded mostly lower on geopolitical concerns.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were Fidelity, Disney, Yeti, and Sears.
