The Metals:

 

Gold climbed $7.07 to $1623.37 in Asia, but it then fell to as low as $1606.29 in New York and ended with a loss of 0.45%.Silver surged to as high as $29.21 by a little after 9AM EST before it also fell back off in New York, but it still ended with a gain of 0.77%.

 

Euro gold fell to about €1260, platinum gained $26.20 to $1423.50, and copper fell a couple of cents to about $3.41.

 

Gold and silver equities traded mostly slightly higher and ended with modest gains.

Oil fell on easing worries over Iran and the possible closing of the Strait of Hormuz.

 

The U.S. dollar index fell as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P rose on relative calm in Europe and hopes for strong earnings reports.

 

Treasuries waffled near unchanged in quiet trade.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were Google, Alcoa, Ford, GM, Chrysler, and Idenix.
