July 23: Gold and Silver End Slightly Lower

The Metals:

 

Gold edged up to $1311.11 at about 8:30AM EST before it chopped back down to $1303.16 by early afternoon in New York, but it then bounced back higher into the close and ended with a loss of just 0.12%. Silver spiked up to $21.045 before it dropped down to $20.896 and then also rebounded, but it still ended with a loss of 0.1%.

 

Euro gold fell to about €969, platinum lost $3 to $1479, and copper remained at about $3.21.

 

Gold and silver equities waffled near unchanged and ended slightly lower.

The Economy:

 

There were no major economic reports today. Tomorrow brings Initial Jobless Claims and New Home Sales.

Oil rose after the EIA said that crude inventories fell 4 million barrels, gasoline supplies rose 3.4 million barrels, and distillates rose 1.6 million barrels.

 

The U.S. dollar index ended slightly higher in mixed trade.

 

Treasuries waffled near unchanged along with the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P on mixed earnings reports.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were PepsiCo, Whirlpool, Apple, Deutsche Bank, LinkedIn, Delta, Biogen, Boeing, and Herbalife.
