December 17: Gold and Silver End Slightly Lower Before Fed Day

The Metals:

 

Gold edged up to $1247.92 in Asia before it fell back to $1227.85 at about 10:30AM EST and then bounced back higher at times, but it still ended with a loss of 0.81%. Silver climbed to $20.24 before it fell back to $19.698, but it then rallied back higher into the close and ended with a loss of just 0.3%.

 

Euro gold fell to about €894, platinum lost $14 to $1345.00, and copper remained at about $3.35.

 

Gold and silver equities fell over 1% in the first hour of trade before they rallied back higher in the last hour of trade, but they still ended with modest losses on the day.

Oil ended with a slight loss on worries about fed tapering.

 

The U.S. dollar index ended slightly lower in mixed trade and treasuries saw slight gains ahead of tomorrow’s fed announcement.

 

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P ended near unchanged in quiet trade.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were Honeywell, JP Morgan Chase, Deutsche Bank, GSK, AT&T, Citigroup, and KKR.
