The Metals:

 

Gold saw notable losses in Asia before it rose to see an over 1% gain at $1791.20 by about 9AM EST, but it then fell back off midday and ended with a gain of just 0.2%. Silver surged to as high as $35.367 before it also fell back off at times, but it still ended with a gain of 0.58%.

 

Euro gold fell to about €1379, platinum gained $20 to $1676.50, and copper rose a few cents to about $3.79.

 

Gold and silver equities rose over 1.5% at the open before they fell back off a bit in midmorning trade, but they still ended with modest gains.

Oil rose on better than expected manufacturing data in the US and Europe.

 

The U.S. dollar index ended slightly lower as the euro rose on decent manufacturing numbers from debt-plagued Spain and Italy.

 

Treasury prices wavered between positive and negative territory on Monday, keeping yields near their lowest in four weeks, as investors pondered the potential of all the central-bank stimulus to overcome the weakening global economic forecast.”

 

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P traded mostly higher on mildly encouraging economic data.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were GM, Macy’s, Honda, 3M, Honeywell, Xstrata, Workday, and Intel.
